Quranic text · Tanzil Uthmani 1.1How translators rendered it
Translation · 5 editionsThese translations render verse 4:22 — the whole verse this word appears in — not this word alone. The correspondence is verse-level: no word-level alignment of translations exists for these editions, so we do not claim which English word renders this Arabic word. Compare the editions →
Do not marry women whom your fathers married, except what is already past. That is improper, indecent, and a bad customAnd marry not those women whom your fathers married, except what hath already happened (of that nature) in the past. Lo! it was ever lewdness and abomination, and an evil wayAnd marry not women whom your fathers have married: for this is a shame, and hateful, and an evil way: though what is past may be allowedAnd do not marry women your fathers married,- except bygones,- for it is abominable and hateful, and an evil wayand not you marry what he married your fathers from the womens except what already he was past indeed he was indecency and abhorrence and he was evil pathGenerated from a table of word-by-word decisions, not written as prose. Arabic word order is preserved, so it reads stiffly and is not a substitute for a translation written by a person. Every verse is rendered, but the whole remains under review: words marked as judgement rest on weaker evidence than the rest and are flagged in place. No tafsir, hadith or existing translation was consulted.
