Contributor terms

These terms govern everything you contribute to quranbench: investigations, evidence, responses, annotations, corrections and any other content you create. You accept them when you create an account, and your acceptance is recorded with the version and the moment you accepted. You cannot create content without a recorded acceptance.

They exist for one reason: so that the open dataset can be redistributed freely, forever, without having to re-contact you. This is decided before your first contribution because it becomes impossible to fix afterwards (see docs/extensibility.md §2).

The Quranic text is not yours or ours to license

Nothing here applies to the Quranic text. The source text is immutable, is never modified, and is always attributed to Tanzil. Contributor terms cover only the human-created layer built around it.

Licence you grant

You license every contribution you make to quranbench under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International licence (CC BY-SA 4.0).

You additionally grant the project an irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free permission to include your contribution in the open dataset and to redistribute it — as part of that dataset and its exports — under CC BY-SA 4.0. This permission survives even if you later delete your account or your content: copies already published in a released dataset version remain licensed.

You keep your copyright. This is a licence, not an assignment.

What you promise

• The contribution is your own work, or you have the right to license it under

these terms.

• It does not infringe anyone's copyright, and you did not copy it from a source

whose licence forbids this.

• You are not contributing machine-translated Quran translations or any text you

do not have the right to relicense.

Attribution

Contributors are credited by their public handle. Dataset exports carry per-record attribution to the contributing handle and the contribution's revision history. Your real name is never published unless you choose to set it as your display name. Pseudonymous attribution still satisfies CC BY-SA 4.0's attribution requirement.

Licence layers, stated separately

• Corpus data (tokens, morphology, roots) carries the licences of its

upstreams — Tanzil (CC BY) and the Leeds Quranic Arabic Corpus (GPL). Those obligations propagate and are not changed by these terms.

• Community data (your contributions) is CC BY-SA 4.0 as above.
• Editorial data (the project's own investigations) may carry its own

licence, stated on the relevant pages.

Moderation

Contributions may be removed or hidden under the published moderation policy. Removal does not revoke the licence already granted on copies in released dataset versions; it removes the content from the live site.

Changes to these terms

New versions get a new version number. A change never applies retroactively to contributions you already made under an earlier version — those remain governed by the version you accepted at the time.
