Translation · 5 editionsThese translations render verse 2:226 — the whole verse this word appears in — not this word alone. Those who vow abstinence from their wives must wait for four months. But if they reconcile—God is Forgiving and MercifulThose who forswear their wives must wait four months; then, if they change their mind, lo! Allah is Forgiving, MercifulThey who intend to abstain from their wives shall wait four months; but if they go back from their purpose, then verily God is Gracious, MercifulThose who swear off from their women, they must wait four months; but if they break their vow God is forgiving and mercifulfor those who they swear abstention from their womens a waiting of four of months so if they reverted so indeed Allah forgiving MercifulGenerated from a table of word-by-word decisions, not written as prose. Arabic word order is preserved, so it reads stiffly and is not a substitute for a translation written by a person. Every verse is rendered, but the whole remains under review: words marked as judgement rest on weaker evidence than the rest and are flagged in place. No tafsir, hadith or existing translation was consulted.
